Money money money

In an attempt to take my personal finances in hand I’ve actually been through and accounted for all expenses and incomings etc. After scaring myself half to death with some of the debt I appear to be in I’ve decided to tackle this head on rather than taking an ostrich in the sand approach and arranged for myself a consolidation loan over the next 5 years at a very low interest rate (thanks tesco clubcard!).

Then I’ve paid off and closed the three things that were owing at a higher interest rate and closed down those accounts. Success! Now I know what I have coming in and going out every month. Fortunately the first is bigger than the second which is always a good thing. And it’s good to have started to do something to better my financial situation. Of course my OH was pissed off that I had done something without asking him but it’s really not his choice as he was the one who put that all in my name so now I’ve sorted it to something I can cope with – and cope with alone if need be.

Christmas shopping is pretty much done as is my little boy’s birthday (he’s 3 next week!) so hopefully aside from food etc I am looking pretty on track financially to start 2017 in a much better place. Fingers crossed anyway. I’m never going to let myself get into that sort of mess again where I don’t know what is owing where in my name. Never again. I’ll only spend what I actually have not borrowed.

A little light reading

Or maybe more like a desperate attempt at finding something that works well. Either way. Anyway, I left you with my list and went off to research and do some reading online for things that could work well for asthma in terms of diet (as well as being amazing for weight loss).

Any diet for me needs to be dairy free (dairy triggers immediate asthma symptoms – yes any form of milk, butter, yogurt, chocolate, cheese etc etc). In a way it’s useful as I used to adore cheese and butter etc so that group is immediately cut out. I kept coming across something called the China Study as being the biggest ever research project on diet so I decided to have a look into it which led into me watching that Forks over Knives on Netflix (thank you Netflix!)

Previously I’ve always leaned towards a more Paleo approach to weight loss but what I read really surprised me both in the China Study and in the accompanying book Whole.

It really got me thinking. And I’m thinking it could be worth a try. Following a whole food plant based diet, cutting the oils and refined sugars out. And also cutting meat which to be honest I’ve not really tried before. It’s not that I live off steak but I do tend to base meals around meat for 75% of the time at least.

One thing I definitely believe is true is that the Food Industry is not going to sell us anything like the truth but will sell us what is profitable and I do believe that a rise in disease nowadays probably links in to diet and what we put inside our bodies. How can it not?

Anyway I’m going to give it a try. I’ve ordered myself a couple of new vegan cookbooks on top of the couple I already have (Vegan cookbooks are brilliant for dairy free recipes!) and I’m going to try out a few meals this week. I’ll post them up on my Instagram where I’ve started a food log of sorts documenting what I’m cooking and eating so if you have instagram follow me and I’ll follow back 😀

On a health front I’ve started my prednisolone taper. Yes it’s a long and slow taper – I’m trying to get down from 50mg without it affecting my breathing and the consultant isn’t at all sure I will get off it all together, but I’ve taken just 45mg today after 4 months on 50mg so 2 weeks hopefully at this dose without a blip and I can go down further. I’ve got that puffy moon steroid face thing going on and I don’t like it. (okay some of it is just me being fat but still I look puffier than ever). Spent yesterday morning throwing up on a theophylline overdose. Boo! It’s a horrid drug but it does keep me breathing, I just hate the high 600mg dose every other day. Never fails to make me sick. Onwards and upwards (downwards scale wise?). I’ll leave you with an image that made me smile 😀

The perks of being an idiot

Do you ever have one of those what the hell am I doing moments? I had one last night laid in bed whilst my OH did whatever he was doing downstairs and I pretended to be asleep because it was better to lay quietly rather than have to sit in some sort of awkward silence staring at whatever he has chosen to put on netflix to watch for the night. The kids were blissfully asleep and not even doing that stirring thing like I was about to get cuddly little bed invaders with me. Okay so my breathing was messed up as it always is at the minute but there I was all willing sleep to come to me and it sort of hit me. That what the hell are you doing with your life moment.

Is this who I am?

Is this what I want?

Is this it?

Can I deal with years of laying in bed pretending to be asleep so I don’t have to stare at a TV in awkward silence wondering what happened to my wants and likes and my life? What happened to me? I didn’t use to be like this. I was the one who did what I wanted when I wanted because I wanted to. When had I become someone who shut up to please someone else or because it was easier just to hide and pretend like I don’t care any more? Hell I’d tell any one of my friends not to accept it and to do something about it. I’d speak about setting examples for your kids and showing them that Mummy doesn’t put up with anything less than the best.

That phrase from Perks of being a Wallflower kept flaring round my mind:

16982-we-accept-the-love-we-think-we-deserve

And I deserve better than this. I deserve to be happy and cared for a loved and I can’t just sit around waiting for someone else to do it for me. I can’t just keep pretending it’s okay.

So I made a list and decided there and then that this list was what I was tackling within the next 365 days. Yes, by this time NEXT year these will no longer be problems but things I have either fixed or am well on the way to fixing. And this blog is going to document it all. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. Because I can’t be in this position next year wishing everything was different but not doing ANYTHING about it. Here you will find ME. Warts and all (I don’t have warts). Wish me luck! Wish me anything to be honest. Just CHANGE because I can’t keep on living this way.

THE LIST

  • Fix my health as best I can because constant hospital admissions for severe brittle asthma that is described as life threatening is CRAP. Taking over 20 tablets a day plus several inhalers is CRAP. Find whatever improves it and DO IT.
  • Lose a tonne of weight. Okay not an actual tonne but 6 stone which feels like a tonne. (That should help with Action Number 1 right?)
  • Sort out my finances and stop being an ostrich who lets OH nag me constantly for buying ANYTHING for the children and take some personal responsibility, make him pay his share and keep our finances separate.
  • Sort out my relationship with OH. No way can you buy a house with someone who doesn’t even LIKE you let alone care about you. *insert flashing lights around this point*.
  • Get myself into a position where I CAN leave him and support the kids myself because I’ll be damned if I let him keep speaking to me (and them) in that way and making our home an unpleasant place to live.
  • Surround myself with things that make me HAPPY and people who support me and love me for being me. Build new support systems that do not involve someone who has displayed that they really do not give a damn.
  • Be a better example to my children who 10000% deserve the best and a Mum who is healthy enough to play with them and keep up!
  • Keep on track of the housework in a systematic way (okay this one is bottom of my list but still: dust is one of my key asthma triggers so it might help).

Okay…365 days to do all of that. Not much right? Just everything. When you’re at the bottom the only way is up!
